Love this so far! It really helped me understand what my expectations should be for my 6 year olds abilities [and all future ages,] and why to start in our home, yard, neighborhood, and expand her knowledge from there. This is a book for parents, not kids, to teach you how to teach them.

This is a great creative book for small children, specifically as it relates to geography and building relationships with the child and his/her surroundings. (house, back yard, neighborhood, town, city, state, country)I educate at home and found this book to be a great addition to resources for kids anywhere from 5yo-13.

Really cool ideas for getting kids excited about maps! We homeschool, and I have only done one activity thus far, and my kids were begging for more. I can't wait to see my kids continue to learn from this book. My kids are on the young side (8, 6, and 4), so we are going slow and really just enjoying the beginning activities.

I bought this for use with The Alveary curriculum. A handful of activities were solid, but most fell flat here and were uninspiring to the point of being detrimental to my children’s understanding of and live for geography. Not recommended.

interesting book on geography and how to implement it in the elementary years

This is a wonderful, well-written book that will be of interest to a wide variety of people--most of whom will unfortunately probably not encounter it--such as parents and homeschoolers and child development professionals and environmental educators, as well as its (presumed by me) targeted audience of classroom teachers. It is the kind of work that uses one subject to explain much about the world, the way we think and use information. It is also a how-to manual on mapmaking with children. I came away from the book with a very clear understanding of several map projects I could do with my children. Because the book first lays the theoretical groundwork for children's understanding of maps, the actual map projects seem intuitive--experiential education at its finest. The author's passion for his subject, and his scholarship come through. There is much information and guidance on what sorts of maps are appropriate for children of different ages to be encouraged to create--from treasure hunts to classroom maps to sophisticated area maps. I am buying copies for my children's teachers!

David Sobel's approach to enjoying nature with children is inspiring. A great resource for parents , teachers and caregivers of children.

    Great!
