About the Author
Patrick H. O’Neil is Professor of Politics and Government at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Indiana University. Professor O’Neil’s teaching and research interests are in the areas of authoritarianism and democratization. His past research focused on Eastern Europe, and his current research deals with the Middle East, particularly Iran. His publications include Revolution from Within: The Hungarian Socialist Worker’s Party “Reform Circles” and the Collapse of Communism and Communicating Democracy: The Media and Political Transitions (editor).

Ronald Rogowski is Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles, and served from 2007 to 2012 as Editor-in-Chief of the American Political Science Review. He is the author of Rational Legitimacy and Commerce and Coalitions and co-author of Electoral Systems and the Balance of Consumer-Producer Power. He was elected in 1994 as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2007–2008 was a Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin.

Today, it would be difficult to distinguish between the clothes worn by men who are in college versus young men panhandling outside of a homeless shelter.Some people will notice many that many of the photos are a bit fuzzy or faded. The original book is fifty years old and this edition is basically a photocopy of those ancient photos with a new English translation.

This is, according the publisher, a facsimile reproduction of the original 1965 book, originally, and i think exclusively, published in Japanese.Its an interesting piece of history, almost anthropology- taking a look around any campus today can yield an interesting comparison.This is NOT as the publisher has said, a high quality jcrew catalog from last season. The shots are 'on the street' not fashion set ups.What it is: A couple of Japanese men's photos and observations from a trip to America - published for a Japanese audience, presumably who had interest in dissecting the Ivy mystique. The mystique, and that era, are long gone, nevertheless i find it interesting to see how another culture, who admired us, viewed us.IF you buy the book with that understanding - then it's a good value for the price and interesting read. If you are expecting a Ralph Loren store window you'll be in for a disappointment.

It would be difficult for any book to live up to the extravagant praise the second coming of "Take Ivy" received on some of the styleblogs I read. Long available only in the rare and expensive Japanese original or in samizdat copies, the English-language release of "Take Ivy" some 45 years after it was first published was to be a milestone in menswear journalism ... even a touchstone for a new generation.So I have to admit a bit of disappointment that I wasn't entirely blown away by "Take Ivy." The photos are interesting, if often a bit grainy, but certainly illustrative of the "Ivy League" style of dress in 1965. I particularly enjoyed the text, written as it was by a Japanese author for a Japanese audience eager to know more about the trendy Ivy style. "As a Japanese man," he writes at one point, "I struggle to conceive of `campus wear' or `college fashion.' It is because we Japanese have been put under the spell of having to wear school uniforms. Japanese students are confined to wearing a stand-up collar jacket, day in and day out for many years. Having come from such a background, even scratching the surface of the general campus wear and college fashion is, undeniably, a daunting task" (p. 122).Undeniably. If there isn't much earth-shattering about "Take Ivy," it is still a useful reference to its particular time and place, and an entertaining time capsule for those of us who prefer a classic approach to men's style. A commenter on one of the styleblogs I mentioned above pointed out that nowhere in these photos is anyone wearing either Sperry Top Siders or LL Bean's Maine Hunting Boots, the supposed be-all and end-all of prep style. And while that is (undeniably, as our author would say) true, "Take Ivy" dates from 1965 while The Official Preppy Handbook, the satire that took on a life of its own as a lifestyle handbook, dates from 1980. Even in the overlapping but not identical worlds of Ivy, preppy, and American Trad style, things can change over 45 or even 15 years. "Take Ivy" is a useful indicator of how much has changed on campus and, in a certain corner of men's style, how blessedly little has changed.

This is an incredible book. It's fascinating to look at the pictures from this era. Within a few years after these pictures had been taken, the ivy look had vanished from college campuses. Kids at ivy schools began dressing just like college students at every other college.

Beautiful photography. I saw the pictures with accompanying Japanese text years ago. Upon advice of John Tinseth, I decided to pick this up, and I enjoy flipping through it from time to time. It's really an interesting look at a different time.

I've always wanted to see this book, but until now it was very expensive if you found an old copy. Now available and in English, this 1965 style book is fun to look at and read and a great resource. It is interesting that most of the guys and clothes pictured can be seen walking the streets today. These classic Ivy basics are still the norm, even with slight modifications over the years. If you're into fashion history this book is required.

Great book and an amazing historical reference on the roots of the Ivy/Trad/Prep style in the Northeast. As a California native and too young to remember the heyday, this was a great way to become familiar with the origins of this now-ubiquitous menswear style.

Not the original, that's been out of print for decades but this pays homage to it. It's a very basic book but a nice throwback to Ivy Style. A great book to flip through.

While I have always been a Catholic who believes in the power of this sacrament, I benefited from Hahn's exposition of the power and importance of the Church's role in forgiveness. The reiteration of our Catholic belief in both venial and mortal sin is a well done, and easy for the potential convert to understand.I have always loved Hahn's books and this one is no different. Preparing for the Lenten Penance service, I read my copy of "Lord Have Mercy: The Healing Power of Confession. Scott Hahn, a convert himself to Catholicism, and now a Professor at St. Francis University, Steubenville, Ohio, and President of St. Paul Center for Theological Studies, has done it again. He is a very inspired, and well educated professor who takes delight in digging into the roots of the Church and finding the earliest references to this most important Sacrament of the Church. Going all the way back to the Book of Genesis and coming forward through the Bible to where Jesus institutes the sacrament with his apostles to forgive sins, "Whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven, and whose sins you loose, they are loosed in Heaven." Scott Hahn teaches how the Jewish faith involved the cleansing and purification of oneself before going into the temple, and how in the Book of Leviticus laws were to be formed, and all these Old Testamentreferences come not to be replaced, but fulfilled in the sacrament of penance. An examination of conscience Appendix provides one with examination of our lives based on the Ten Commandments, and Prayers that can be said.It all made sense when in our penance service this sacrament was depicted as a large umbrella, purple for the color of Lent, underneathon one side was a word - Confession, which was the telling of our sins to another, in this case, a Priest who is given the authority through the Church, established by Christ. Above the umbrella is a large word Reconciliation.This is what the sacrament is in a nutshell. We confess our sins, admitting we have sinned (and every live human being is a sinner), we come to Christ in the sacrament and are forgiven our sins, and given a penance (token prayer, or reading to pray for forgiveness and thanking God for His forgiveness), and we are reconciled with God after we reconcile ourselves with those we offended if we can do so.This book is easy to read, and I even went and marked the pages where biblical references were made to follow the flow of the development of this sacrament. It all makes sense and thanks to Scott's wonderful and easy to follow style of writing, I learned even more than I grew up with over 72 years. I highly recommend this book for any one Catholic or non-Catholic to read and see what this scholar, and theologian, has found in his personal study to help us in our prayer in time of problems, "Lord, Have Mercy." When entering the church, I was so totally prepared for confession that my confessor was just surprised. I have read but two chapters. I am finding the material to be very germane to this Lenten season. Scott Hahn writes in a way which is thought provoking without being preachy. Scott Hahn's writing is such that there is layer after layer of well stated levels of meanings or depth of thought to each chapter. There is a coordinating series on EWTN, the Catholic TV station. Both the book and the EWTN series are well worth the effort needed to study.

Confession sets our relationship right with God, which extends to our relationship with others. A right relationship with God transforms our soul so that we can cooperate with grace to live the good, the true, and the beautiful.

Really enjoy Scott Hahns writing. I am an adult convert to catholicism so my education is lacking. I really enjoy his books because they explain the important details in ways that make it easy to understand. He also is very passionate about the relationship with Jesus and it shows in his writing.

Scott Hahn has wowed me again! I am a convert to the Church, was brought in this past Easter 2015. I started watching Lord Have Mercy on EWTN, and I just had to get the book, and I am glad I did. Scott Hahn has helped me gain a very deeper and strong love for the Sacrament of Penance!

As all of Scott's writings, a very good read and even better in hard bound edition.
